Hello, and welcome. As the founder of the best medical spa in Sarasota, I’ve had a front-row seat to one of the biggest (and best, in my opinion) shifts in the world of health and beauty: men are finally embracing self-care.
Ten years ago, the men who walked into my practice were often “dragged in” by their wives or partners. They’d sit nervously, glance at the door, and whisper, “My wife says I need Botox.”
Today? The change is incredible.
Men are walking in on their own. They’re booking consultations on their lunch breaks. They’re educated, they have specific goals, and they’re investing in themselves, not just to look younger, but to look better. They want to look as energized and driven as they feel.
The “why” is simple. The old stigma is fading, and the “Zoom effect” (staring at our own faces in meetings for three years) was a powerful motivator. But I believe the “why” is even deeper. It’s about confidence. It’s about aligning your reflection with your personal and professional ambitions.
So, let’s pull back the curtain. What are guys actually getting? I’m all about demystifying these treatments. Here is the no-nonsense guide to the top 5 medspa treatments my male clients ask for every single week.
Treatment #1: Neurotoxins (“Brotox”)
This is, without a doubt, the #1 gateway Botox treatment for men. “Brotox” is just a catchy name for neurotoxin injectables like Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin.
What It Is: These are medical-grade proteins that work by temporarily relaxing the specific muscles that cause wrinkles when you make expressions.
The “Male” Approach: This is critical. The biggest fear I hear from men is, “I don’t want to look ‘frozen’ or ‘done.'” They’re terrified of that shiny, immovable forehead.
And they’re right to be. Treating a man’s face is completely different from treating a woman’s. Men have much stronger facial muscles (like the frontalis in the forehead), which means they often require a higher dose to be effective.
However, the injection pattern is different. The goal isn’t to erase every line, which can look feminine. The goal is to soften the deep “11s” (those furrows between your brows that make you look angry) and ease the horizontal forehead lines, all while letting you keep your natural expression. It’s the difference between looking “frozen” and looking “rested.”
I’ll never forget a local CEO who came in for his first consultation. He was skeptical, to say the least. He told me, “I just want to look less stressed, not like a mannequin.” We started conservatively, and he came back a few weeks later, thrilled. He said his team commented that he seemed “more relaxed” and “in a better mood” in meetings. That’s the real win.
- Downtime & What to Expect: You can go right back to the office. You’ll have tiny, mosquito-bite-like bumps at the injection sites for about 20 minutes. The only “rule” is no heavy exercise, saunas, or rubbing the area for the rest of the day. The magic isn’t instant it takes about 7-14 days to see the final, smooth result.
Treatment #2: Dermal Fillers (for the Jawline)
If Brotox is about relaxing, fillers for men are about building. This has become incredibly popular with my male clients, from their 20s to their 60s.
What It Is: These are sterile, hyaluronic acid (HA) gels that are skillfully injected under the skin to add volume, structure, and definition.
The “Male” Approach: Forget “lip plumping.” For men, fillers are all about structure. The single most-requested area is the jawline. A strong, angular jaw and a defined chin are classic hallmarks of masculinity. As we age, we lose bone and fat in this area, leading to a “softer” or jowly look.
This is where the artistry comes in. For a man, I’m not “filling” his face; I’m “sculpting” it. I use thicker, more structural fillers and place them deep, right on top of the bone (the mandible), to create sharper angles and a stronger, more chiseled profile.
A few months ago, a man in his late 20s came to me. His concern? He felt his profile was “weak” in photos and it was hurting his confidence on dating apps. We used two syringes of filler to strengthen his chin and define his jaw. The result was subtle but powerful. He didn’t look like a different person; he looked like the most confident version of himself.
- Downtime & What to Expect: This is not a “no downtime” treatment, in my opinion. You can go about your day, but you should expect swelling and potential bruising for 5-7 days. The area will feel tender. My advice: don’t get jawline filler the week before a big presentation or a wedding.
Treatment #3: Microneedling (The Skin Quality “Workhorse”)
This is my favorite treatment for men who say, “I don’t know where to start, I just want my skin to look healthier.”
What It Is: Microneedling for men (or “collagen induction therapy”) uses a medical device to create thousands of tiny, controlled micro-punctures in the skin. This “controlled injury” sends your skin’s natural healing process into overdrive, flooding the area with new collagen and elastin. Many of my clients upgrade to “PRP,” where we use your own platelet-rich plasma to supercharge the healing.
The “Male” Approach: Men’s skin is often thicker, oilier, and can have more textural issues. Microneedling is a fantastic, non-laser way to address a long list of male concerns:
- Acne scars (a very common reason men seek this)
- Large pores
- Uneven or rough skin texture
- Fine lines
One of the most rewarding cases I’ve had here in Sarasota was a gentleman in his 30s. He had been self-conscious about pitted acne scars from his teenage years. We did a series of three microneedling with PRP sessions. At his follow-up, he was a different person—not just because his skin was visibly smoother, but because his confidence was through the roof. He said he’d stopped feeling like people were “just staring at his scars.”
- Downtime & What to Expect: You will be red. For the first 1-2 days, you will look and feel like you have a moderate sunburn. Around Day 3, your skin will feel tight and dry (like fine sandpaper), and you’ll experience some light flaking. This is the old, damaged skin making way for the new. You must be diligent with sunscreen after.
Treatment #4: Laser Skin Resurfacing (The “Sun Damage Reset”)
Here in Florida, this is a must. I see the effects of our beautiful, sunny lifestyle in my practice every single day.
What It Is: This laser treatment for men uses focused light and laser energy to precisely remove damaged outer layers of skin while also heating the deeper layers to stimulate a massive collagen response.
The “Male” Approach: I call this the “Golfer’s Reset” or the “Boater’s Fix.” It’s for the man who has spent years enjoying the outdoors and has the receipts on his face to prove it:
- Stubborn brown “sun spots”
- Broken capillaries (redness)
- A “crepey” or “leathery” texture
- Deeper set wrinkles
Lasers are brilliant for targeting that “weathered” look and essentially giving you a fresh canvas. It’s one of the most transformative non-surgical treatments we offer for truly reversing signs of aging.
- Downtime & What to Expect: This is the most significant downtime on the list. You need to plan for 5-7 days of “social downtime.”
- Day 1-2: You will be very red and swollen (like a bad sunburn).
- Day 3-5: Your skin will turn a bronze color and feel extremely rough, like sandpaper. This is the old skin (called MENDs) coming to the surface.
- Day 5-7: This “sandpaper” skin will flake and peel off, revealing the new, bright pink, healthy skin underneath.
Treatment #5: Chemical Peels (The “Glow-Up”)
If lasers are a “reset,” think of a chemical peel for men as a “refresh.”
What It Is: A medical-grade acid solution (like Glycolic, Salicylic, or TCA) is applied to the skin. It works by dissolving the “glue” that holds dead, dull skin cells together, forcing them to shed.
The “Male” Approach: Men’s skin is, on average, 25% thicker than women’s and often oilier. It can handle and needs a strong exfoliator. A light-to-medium peel is fantastic for men because it:
- Clears out clogged pores (especially around the nose)
- Fades minor discoloration
- Helps prevent ingrown hairs
- Gives the skin an immediate “brighter” and smoother look
This is the perfect “lunchtime” treatment. I have a client, a busy attorney, who schedules one every eight weeks. He says it’s his secret weapon to look less “dull and tired” for his Monday morning court appearances.
- Downtime & What to Expect: For a light peel, you’ll be reddish (like a light sunburn) for a day. The real downtime happens around Day 3-5, when you’ll experience light flaking. The golden rule: Do not pick at the peeling skin.
| Treatment | Best For (The “Male” Goal) | Typical Downtime |
| “Brotox” | Softening “angry 11s” & forehead lines | None |
| Dermal Fillers | Sculpting a strong, chiseled jawline | 5-7 days (swelling/bruising) |
| Microneedling | Fixing skin texture (acne scars, pores) | 1-3 days (redness/flaking) |
| Laser Resurfacing | Erasing sun damage & “weathered” skin | 5-7 days (peeling) |
| Chemical Peels | A quick “refresh” for dull, oily skin | 1-3 days (flaking) |
Your Medspa Game Plan
My most important piece of advice has nothing to do with a specific laser or needle. It has to do with safety and expertise.
The medspa world can be confusing. My advice is to treat this like any other medical decision.
- Check Credentials. Your provider should be a Nurse Practitioner (NP or APRN), Physician’s Assistant (PA-C), or a Registered Nurse (RN) working directly under the supervision of a Medical Director (MD) who is on-site. These credentials (like my FNP-C) mean we have thousands of hours of advanced medical training.
- Look at Their “Male” Portfolio. Ask to see before-and-after photos of male patients. You want a provider who understands male anatomy and aims for natural, structured results, not a “one-size-fits-all” approach.
- Trust the Consultation. A consultation should be a conversation, not a sales pitch. It’s where I listen to your goals, analyze your unique facial structure, and develop a long-term plan. If a provider doesn’t talk about risks or alternatives, or if a deal sounds “too good to be true,” walk away.
My Final Thought: It’s Not “Anti-Aging,” It’s “Pro-Maintenance”
This shift in men’s aesthetics isn’t about vanity. It’s about maintenance. It’s about feeling that your appearance reflects the energy and drive you have inside. It’s no different than investing in a good suit, a gym membership, or a healthy diet.
Here at Rose Medical Aesthetics in Sarasota, this is the entire philosophy I’ve built my practice on. We are a medical clinic first. My goal is to be your long-term partner in health and beauty, creating a plan that is safe, effective, and, most importantly, right for you.
It’s an exciting time, and I’m just so thrilled to see men finally taking a well-deserved seat at the table of self-care.
